About Me

I'm a dyslexic Bookseller, and a volunteer for a not-for-profit organisation called TOTKO, or Takes One To Know One. They support people with dyslexia, as well as those with other learning differences/disabilities like dyscalculia, dyspraxia, apsergers and ADHD. I originally just signed up to design their website, but I now help out in other ways as well.

I joined TOTKO because I became frustrated by the way people with learning disabilities are treated, and by the stories I heard about mistreatment and stigma from those I know, and here on the forums. I had been posting here for several years before I got in contact with them, trying to do things to help people, Id also mentored children with special needs in the past, but it wasnt enough, and I wanted to do more to make a difference to how people with learning disabilities, and their families, were treated.

In addition to working with TOTKO, I have started making a website with information on it designed to help dyslexic people get more involved with reading and writing, called dysbooks.com. Ive tried to put something on there for all ages, and information that will be useful for parents and teachers as well.

I studied English and Creative Writing at university, and graduated with a 2.1...not something my mum ever thought would happen to her dyslexic daughter! At one point my primary school teachers told her I'd never read or write. However, after having specialist tuition with Dyslexia Action, and getting help from my grandmother, a teacher who re-trained to support children with special needs, I improved dramatically. School was still a struggle, as was University at times, but I've gradually gone from strength to strength.

I am hoping to peruse a career in marketing, within the third sector, so I can continue to use my skills and knowledge to help others. Since the age of six Ive wanted is to become a published author, and I spend a lot of my free time writing. Ive just started on my first attempt at a novel.

Many of my family and friends are dyslexic, or have another learning disability/difference, and my boyfriend has dyspraxia.

If you want to know more about me, TOTKO, Dysbooks, or any of my other projects, then feel free to send me a PM.

(I have visual problems which contribute to my dyslexia, hence the blue specs.)
