Help Finding a Job for Dyslexics

For people who are severely affected, dyslexia can present a serious obstacle to finding a job. A bad experience of education may result in a lack of confidence and self-esteem. Problems with reading and writing can make it difficult to apply for jobs. It may also be difficult to do some aspects of a job without the employer making some adjustments.

Resolving these difficulties will not always be easy. However, people with severe dyslexia may be eligible for help from government schemes such as New Deal or Workstep. The aim of these schemes is to help people with a disability find, and keep, a suitable job.

Who is eligible for help under New Deal or Workstep?

To qualify for help under one of these schemes, you must meet two criteria. First, you must be classed as having a disability - under the terms of the Disability Discrimination Act (1995), disability means 'a physical or mental impairment which has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on the ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities'. Secondly, you must be receiving a benefit such as Job Seeker's Allowance or Incapacity Benefit. (For full details of qualifying benefits, see New Deal's website:

If you think you are dyslexic and your dyslexia is preventing you from finding a job, you should consider getting a proper assessment. With a report from a chartered psychologist, you may find it easier to access a government-funded scheme. (See Getting a Full Assessment for Dyslexia.)

What do these schemes offer?

  • Profiling: help to identify an appropriate kind of job.
  • Training: if necessary, training to improve relevant job skills.
  • Job-seeking skills: help with CV and making applications.
  • Help with interviews: coaching in interview skills; advice on how to discuss health issues at interview; and, if necessary; someone to accompany you to interview.
  • On-going support: agencies can work with an employer to make reasonable adjustments in the workplace to help you do the job.
